LAWYER CRIME BLOTTER: ROBERT MCMAHON

I may never have met attorney Robert McMahon. Now it is unlikely that I will ever meet him. He was sentenced on September 29, 2022 to a federal prison term of 24 months for possession of child pornography. From the online roll of attorneys it appears that Mr. McMahon was admitted to the practice of law in October of 2016. From 2017 to last March Robert worked as a deputy prosecutor in Lake and Porter Counties and as a “judicial commissioner” for the Lake Superior Court in Crown Point. Then he was arrested on child porn charges. Although Robert’s defense lawyer (Mark Psimos, Jr.) is quoted in the NWI Times article of September 30, 2022 as calling attention to the loss of Robert’s law license, the mentioned online roll of attorneys shows, as of September 30, 2022, that Robert McMahon is “active” and in “good standing.” I expect that status to change soon.

So what court did Robert defile by sitting in judgment of others while being addressed as “your honor?” According to my 2021 LCBA Directory, Robert McMahon was listed as the first (and only) “Commissioner” for Judge Julie N. Cantrell of the Lake Superior Court County Division III. The CLB encourages Judge Cantrell to employ a more thorough vetting of candidates for a position of judicial authority. The Division III Court stands discredited from Robert’s tenure there.

The better news is that the bench and bar are now free of one vile criminal.

Addendum: The earlier prediction of a change in McMahon’s license to practice has been confirmed as of March 8, 2023 by a majority (3/2) of the Indiana Supreme Court which ordered him suspended for two years without automatic reinstatement. CJ Rush and Massa dissented in favor of disbarment.
